Ukraine had Russian nuclear weapons (created; maintained; Russia held the launch codes) while Ukraine kept nuclear power (unfortunately including Chernobyl, out of commission for around 10,000 years); Russia paid leasing fees on their Black Sea Naval base; tariffs on a gas pipeline to the EU (so high Germany and Russia built another route, now destroyed) and there was a division of USSR naval and military assets. There was also a neutrality clause; that was something the Western interests did not respect; that's the main reason for the war. So while the E.U. plus America and it's NATO try to play the innocent party: the assets in question were all USSR "stuff" (not theirs); they offered Ukraine billions (the E.U. calling it "aid"; America calling this an "investment"); they bought thousands of square miles of (top quality) Ukrainian farmland; the Pentagon says there were 46 Bio-labs (I assume for GM food research, V Nuland expressing concern they'd fall into Russian hands... but they destroyed most or all of them); there were murky energy deals (see H. Biden, the oil tycoon). All in all it did not look like the Western cosignatories respected the neutrality clause. So after numerous Russian objections to (what they perceived as) Western interference; a show of strength (laying siege to Kyiv); they "intervened" in the eight year civil war and I believe the Prof is correct on only one thing; they are not going to stop. As for nuclear proliferation; it was America that tore up various treaties; they key one relating to ICBMs, but there were others. Russia kept to the conditions of the memorandum for decades, but they weren't going to let the Western interests simply buy up Ukraine and leave them without port facilities; or put more missile bases on their borders; or keep bending rules (they wrote, but have difficulty following). While the reason America is so interested in a non-NATO/non-EU country is they are trying to protect their (earlier) investment and that is what Russia is destroying (all that farmland is full of mines and cluster ammo, it's lost). While the American corporate media trying to claim they care about people (after NATO killed 50,000+ kids in Iraq/ Afghanistan) beggars belief), sickening and cynical too. The West hasn't anything to teach Russia about land warfare; while the Western interests cannot afford a neutral Ukraine (financially), now a word from your sponsor (buy guns).

  2.  @scowell  So you can't read (poor chap). Ukraine didn't have the launch codes; so not really their weapons at all; but they did get nuclear power in the deal.

  4.  @scowell  Nuclear weapons need to be maintained; I don't support stupidity; they are no use without the launch codes. The UK were cosignatories to an agreement they did not respect; Russia said they would go to war if Ukraine gave up neutrality (and they did). UK v Russia won't last long.

All that prime farmland they bought now covered in mines and cluster munitions, 46 bio-labs (according to the Pentagon) gone; cheap Russian energy to the EU gone... Yeah, when America gets involved things quickly turn to rubble (they've got "previous"). .

As a father it's your job to worry if you wish to take that on; I recommend chamomile tea or lying in a dark room when it comes to dealing with teenagers; sometimes the less one knows the better; but national service (up to 347 days) is viewed (by "the old guard" here) as teaching a lot of useful skills; discipline; it also provides a home guard, but I've met many in my travels who are avoiding military service. With an estimated 80% of Finnish males (around 27,000 annually); I really don't see Finland as being under imminent threat from Russia. The conflict in Ukraine has been going for about 20 months; also for 8 years as a civil war; it doesn't look like Russia is about to march on Paris or Berlin; they seem to have an issue over Ukrainian neutrality and all this "aid" from EU and "investment" from America as interference. I don't think Finland is responsible for any of that, it seems to be a proxy war between America and Russia, while I agree war isn't going to solve matters and sending money to wars only seems to make things worse (see Syria). Since I don't expect Finland to attack Russia, I wouldn't lose sleep over other people's war, children who never call, never write that's another matter; poor diplomacy is a real problem.

I would have thought that the people of Germany would be well aware of the dangers of conflict with Russia; should probably be more annoyed about people blowing up their gas supply pipelines (50% they paid for) than they appear to be and all that "aid" the EU gave to Ukraine, was it charity or an incentive to join? Opinions seem to differ...

  8.  @ChrisTian-rm7zm  Russia is quite civilized; everyone is officially heterosexual and they love chess; while it's America that doesn't want Europe to make business with Russia (and what America wants, America gets); so: China; Russia; India and others will do business themselves, there way; I doubt they'll miss the globalist New World Order (it's bust).
