  1. Yes, the flying Irishman ends up in Dublin (what a coincidence); didn't notice all the water?! Some mistake ;-) He had previously been denied permission to fly this route... a 29 hour flight tho'... amazing accomplishment!

  3. Notice he never ejected, instead he kept trying to line up to land (and that's with no canopy and helmet). What an amazing individual; flying an interceptor that can travel at 1,300mph, he kept his wits about him and avoided (despite a few near misses) a catastrophe. They talk about "the right stuff" and okay it was his fault; but donating the money the media paid for the story to the RAF charity shows integrity and dedication. Thanks "Paper Skies" a story worth telling and you told it well; Wing Commander Walter "Taffy" Holden, what a man!

  4.  @benjiro8793  Thanks for the info Ben; I didn't know that precaution was in place. I do recall a tragedy a few years back when a Red Arrow pilot was killed when the ejector seat malfunctioned on the ground. Of course it makes perfect sense to employ lock-bolts during maintenance; that feature of the Lightning controls that put Taffy Holden in the air seems very peculiar, I doubt he would have ejected even if he could, but that's just idle speculation... It's a fantastic story; certainly worth hearing and I do like his request to see the cockpit (doesn't want to sit in the plane, again); again thanks for the info, I'm not an aircraft engineer; so you won't see me up in one of these ;-)
