People get their views from documentaries, and those documentaries have been influenced by propaganda views after the war made by Allied solidiers that wanted to describe the Germans as super-solidiers so they could brag about themselves how great they were that they could defeat the Germans. Or if an allied general lost a battle against the Germans, he would excuse his own incompetence by saying that there was nothing he could do because the Germans had so superior weapons and tactics. So this idealised version of the Wehrmacht comes western Europe, and some it perhaps comes from the Germans themselves that wanted too boost their own battle performance to the skies, while blaming Hitler and the SS for all the failures.
