Two companies were in a competition to build the new heavy tank for the German army. Posche felt so certain that he would win that he had already begun making 200 tanks. But when the early versions of the new tank was tested it was clear that Porsches tank was useless sh*t. Henchel won the competition instead. And the Tiger tank we know today was built by Henchel. Its tank was better and it was cheaper to build and did not use lots of copper to make (Germany was at war and copper was something that was in short supply). And the engine was also overly complex on the Porsche tank so the army did not like it. Porsche was however a good friend of Hitler, and it was felt like it would be a waste to just throw away all those 200 big tanks that had already been build. They had not yet been given any turret however. But instead of putting a Tiger tank turret on the tank, it would just be easier to put a box with a big gun on top of the tank instead. And so was the new Ferdinand tank born.

His obsession with his petrol-electric engine on the Elephant tank was overly complex and it performed shitty on the battlefield... but that didn't matter, because Porsche liked to engineer and do overly complex designs instead of making practical economic things and winning wars. He also lost the competition of making the turret for the Tiger II tank, but he still would deliver many such turrets to the German army which had to accept his junk the same way as they got the Elephant tank.

I always call it the elephant too, simply because of the game Panzer General which I grew up with. Its still a great game that I can recommend.
