I guess I would prefer to have 4 tanks driving in a diamond shaped formation, so they could spray each other with machine gun fire if someone tries to climb up on a tank... all you need to do is fire as much lead as possible, and your friendly tank could easily survive some hits from a machine gun while enemy infanrty can't.
