If Hitler only had listened to his Generals and don't touched the General staff then Germany would have won the war. First world war tactics with frontal assaults was a winning concept. And had only listened to the old guard officers then he wouldn't have wasted time on building panzer divisions. Infantry are the crown of all weapons.

He was not the best, but he was still quite good.

I don't have any books to offer. But I knew 3 documentary series you can watch. Tanks! is an old Discovery channel documentary from the 1990s about the German tank arm as a summary for dummies. Great tank battles isn't so much of dry documentary with data, numbers maps and such - but rather this documentary is seeing the war from the perspective of the solidier on the ground, and the veterans on both sides talks about the tank battles they fought against each other and what tactics they used. And with computer models one can get a simple understanding on how the many different tank battles was fought. And last but not least we got German war files which is a series for tanknerds and interested people alike.... for an entire hour you will be able to hear about different types of vehicles...SPGs, Tigers, Panthers, Panzer I and II, PanzerII, StuGs, Tank destroyers... you name it. Yes. At the Dieppe raid they did that so the Germans shouldn't be able to see troops coming from the water to the beach and then fire on them. But soon the allies discovered that this had been a big mistake as the Germans were slaughtering the allies at the beach and naval gunfire could do nothing to stop it, because they couldn't see where they should have directed their fire.

StuGs belonged to the infantry and the crews on those vehicles wore a grey uniform as artillery men did. Panzer troops had black uniforms instead. StuGs was used for helping the infantry and in the later war years it was more and more used to fight enemy tanks because Germany had too few tanks to do that job so the StuGs then needed to help the foot solidiers. The panzerjägers were basicly just a high velocity anti-tank gun that was put on tracks so that it could move around a bit easier. They were cheaper to build than tanks because they had no armour and their design was simple. But protection for the crew was of course shit on all those tanks... Nashorn, panzerjäger 1b, and all Marders. And then we have the more armoured tank hunters, such as Ferdinand, Jagdtiger, Jagdpanther, Jagdpanzer IV, Hetzer and so on... and they were also intended as defensive weapons. However, the war created huge losses for the German army and most panzer divisions didn't have anything close to the hundreds of tanks that they were supposed to have on paper. At the battle of Korsun in 1944 one can read that most panzer divisons in that battle only had a dozen or so tanks left for service. So what did the Germans do? The finally decided to steal StuGs and other turretless tanks and use old outdated Panzer III tanks in their panzer divisions just so they could get their numbers of tanks up so they atleast would be worthy of calling a tank divison.

He was one of the creators of the Bundeswehr so he obviously had many fanboys in western Europe. He tried to improve his reputation while men like Liddell Hart were willing to help him so he could suck up some fame for himself and say that he invented Blitzkrieg even before it was cool. So are the things those guys are saying just made up fiction? Yes. Of course. And this thing is not only common among the German Generals that were eager to get a new job for the western powers during the cold war. Generals have always loved to lie and claim glory for victories and blame others for lost battles. Swedish Generals in the 1600s did just those things when they were talking about their actions in the 30-years war. Nor does Westmorland blame himself for the defeat in Vietnam. And Ludendorff did at first take the blame for Germany's defeat in World war1 in the letters he wrote, but later on he would deny any guilt to the defeat and spread the stab-in-the-back myth. Because I guess that things felt better for him this way. Perhaps an autobiography can offer some interesting perspectives upon things, but most of the times they are filled with factually incorrect things.
