The german army had their smart tricks, and then they had their auftrags taktik. It inherited its proffesionalism from the army of the Kaiser. In the First World War it almost on its own drove the Central powers towards victory after the Austrians suffered so heavy losses the first 4 months of the war that they basicly were knocked out of war. And the Ottomans suffered so heavy losses in the winter offensive in Armenia in late 1914 that their Army was no longer the one of a great war. So Germany had to fight almost alone, but still it almost managed to defeat Beligium, then Serbia, then Romania, then Russia, then Italy, and the French army almost collapsed after the failed Nivlle offensive, and if America hadn't intervened then both the French and Britsh army could very well have collapsed as well. So the German army was superior in many ways. But when it comes to the 2nd World War I think that the greatness of the German army have been exaggerated a bit. It was also much luck behind the German successes as well. They achieved more than the Kaisers army despite being a much weaker force.
