Well punishment is based on justice. And justice is based on a legal system that have to take many things into consideration - deter future crimes by a punishment, give revenge for the wrong doings, aknowledge that the victims did not deserve the ill someone brought upon them, etc etc. I am no fan of leftwing ideas that we should be soft on crime and trying to rehabilitate people. Rehabilitation might work on youngters that commit minor crimes. But for adults who repeatedly commit serious crimes like rape and murder do I not see any point of rehabilitation. Capital punishment or a lifetime of slave labor are more suitable for them.

@dpt6849 The Bible is worthless as a moral guideline. Jesus said we should "turn the other cheek", which completly contradict what the book of Exodus which says "an eye for an eye". Personally I think Jesus ideas are stupid, like for example his ideas of not fighting back against evil people with stupid pacifism. Evil people like the nazis who happily gas innocent civilians to death are not people you can stop unless you use deadly force. And likewise do I think it is stupid to expect that all sins can be forgiven. Indeed I think it is cruel and disrespectful if people look down upon a jew if he cannot like he can forgive the men who killed his mother, his sisters and most of his uncles, cousins and grandparents. I remember that I saw a documentary where a polish holocaust survivor said that he had lost 48 out of his 51 relatives in the holocaust. So I can totally understand why such things can never be forgotten. And people who preech forgiveness for all their sins are stupid.
