It was just a retreat that used civilians on the boats as human shields. I do not call that skillful. Its just cowardly and a warcrime.

Putin always let his Generals present the bad news to the Russian public. Meanwhile do he present the good news himself and take credit for it.

Crossing a kilometre wide river is a hard thing. Russia have already failed many times in this war. And with lots of Russian guns on the other side of the ice cold river I think that it is too early for an attack now. But with long range artillery, drones and artillery radars could those Russian guns be wiped out and an amphibious operation could be possible. But it will not be easy. We are talking about a big and difficult operation here. Something like D-Day. Even crossing the river at the narrowest points could be very risky and difficult. So it remains to be seen what Ukraines next move is.

Start acting competent?

Western support for the war might fall if they do that (you know countries like Germany have a large pacifist brainless population that could not accept that, and Italy also got a large population that just look for excuses for abandoning Ukraine). Furthermore would Putin get what he wants. Instead of made up lies about evil Ukrainians murdering Russian civilians, can he now use the honest press take photos from his bombed home towns and say that Russians are the victims and blah blah, and rally the russian people to support his unpopular war. Personally I do not mind if Moscow and St Petersburg turns into dust and rubble. The people there certainly deserves no better. But is it worth the risk of bombing them, that is the question? Will the upsides be larger than the downsides that I mentioned?

Seems like the ambitions of Russia has been lowered. Taking Ukraine is out of question. Keeping a few provinces of stolen land to save face and not be seen as a loser is perhaps what they hope for now. They fortify the frontline with the new Wagner line. They retreat from Khersun and establish a new more easily defencible line behind the river. They use as much land mines as they can, and they shorten their supply line to Russia. Their new wortless reservist army is only good for defensive operations and the loss of the contractor army and the armored fist and self-propelled artillery makes the dream of offensive operations much harder. And the huge country and the crappy russian logistics have already made it known around the world that Russia is not capable of deep penetrations into Ukrainian territory without upcoming defeats. Russia will probably keep on hiding behind the Russian border like cowards and the russian airforce is incapable of any deep thrusts into Ukraine anyways. So this new tactic is therefore believed to suit russia better.

Putin said that the stolen land is considered a part of Russia now. So therefore can he use mobilized troops to defend the Russian homeland. Yes this is comical stupid mental gymnastics. But in Russia does vodka logic apply, so this reasoning is seen as legit there.

When you are wortless and got no source of pride to cling on to aside from some military glory... then it feels painful to admit that you got defeated by a smaller country because of your own incompetence. Not only are russia evil. They are stupid and wortless as well. The last part bothers them even more than the being seen as evil part.

I rather see Russia collapse into a civil war. And then can we in the west support the side which is losing just in order to prolong the war and destruction as much as possible so that as many lives and buildings as possible are destroyed.

Putin is wasting a thousand men a day on stupid suicide offensives in the east. I would assume that the russians would want to use lots of artillery, armor and their best troops for an offensive operation. But with HIMARS and Ukrainian supremacy in artillery would this be more difficult than earlier in this war. Furthermore have Russia lost much of their best tanks and best troops.. so I guess that they will have to use more junk to fill up the shortages of force for an offensive. The other alternative is to stay on the defensive. Train the noobs, lick the wounds and continue to use the better troops as a reserve.
