  1.  @peterpan7903  North Korea and Pakistan also got nuclear weapons, but no one considers them as Great Powers. Then I do not think russia deserves to be called a great power either.

  2.  @evgeniya7853  The past means nothing. Italy is no longer a super power like Rome was. Macedonia are not like it was under Alexander the Great. The Dutch empire that held Java and New York is gone, so is the Portugease empire that held parts of India and Africa and Brazil. The Norwegian empire that held Greenland, Iceland, Ireland, England, Faroe islands, and Orkney Islands and North America are also gone. The Swedish empire that conquered Moscow, the Baltics and occupied all of Poland and Germany are also gone. The Austro-Hungrian empire is gone. The enormous Spanish and Ottoman empires are gone. To say that russia deserves to be called a Great power because of its past is therefore just absurd if you do not grant all the other former Great Powers the same title.

Because russia does not have those things. 8 countries have more people than russia do. 10 Countries do have a higher GDP than Russia. 13 countries have more Fortune 500 companies than Russia. And I would rank USA, India, South Korea, China as all being stronger than russia militarily due to more men in uniform or more money spent on the military. However if a force mobilization was done, then I would consider Japan, Germany, France and UK also as militarily superior. Russia do still not have a 5th generation fighter aircraft. Its most modern air defence cannot even deal with American HIMARS missiles from the 1990s. And comparing Admiral Kutzetzov with a Catobar aircraft carrier, is like comparing F16 fighter with a Mitsubishi Zero in terms of capabilities. Its artillery is also inferior to its western counterparts in everything - range, precision, reload time, time to set up the system to be read to fire, and inferior because it takes longer time from firing to moving away.

  4. One cannot measure thisđŸ’©country just by its low GDP and compare it to other countries. Its also a country with high corruption. It have not a single Fortune 500 company outside the oil industry, and not having any of the worlds 500 largest companies means less global power, less technological know-how and innovation, slower economic growth. Then we have the problem of corruption, technological backwardness compared to western countries, high levels of enviromental pollution, and a low GDP per person. Despite being a country of 144 million have it not managed to invent a single anything that have improved lives of ordinary people, and the closest thing they have come to that are tetris - which is just pathethic. So for these reasons would I not even rank russia among the 20 biggest economies in the world.

  5. ​ @evgeniya7853  Explain how Russia is a great power then? Is it the size of the population? No because Bangladesh, Nigeria, Pakistan and Indonesia and Brazil all got more people than russia. And none of those countries are a super power. Is it because russia got nuclear weapons? No, because North Korea and Pakistan also got nuclear weapons. Is it because Russia got an aircraft carrier? No. Thailand, Spain, Turkey and Italy also got weak aircraft carriers like Russia and none of them are considered a Super power. Is it because the Russian economy is strong? No. Because Brazil, Italy and Canada all got a higher GDP than russia. Russias standard of living is low. Its manufacturing is weak. The country have no Fortune 500 companies that are not related to oil & energy, or banking related to energy - and to me this is great sign of economic weakness. I would not even rank the country among the 20 most important economies in the world. Add to that all problems that harms long term economic growth such as corruption and enviromental pollution that destroys public health, kill fish stocks and wild animals and plants and trees. Is russia a super power because of its military? Not really. Given the levels of corruption, outdated doctrine, ineffiecent logistics, outdated equipment, poor training and lack of dicipline would I feel much more afraid of going to war against Japan, South Korea or India than I would be against Russia. Is Russia a great power because of its global cultural influence? No, I have never bought anything made in Russia, aside from some IKEA glass that said made in Russia. But IKEA is a Swedish company and I am a Swede.. so allow me to not be so impressed. I cannot say that Russian culture have left much impression on me. Its not like I watch any Russian TV series like I do with CSI from USA or Black Adder. I buy Nintendo from Japan and Heineken beer from the Netherlands, drive French cars, listen to ABBA from Sweden, play with Danish Lego. But what everyday item do I get from russia? I dunno. So for that reason do I not regard russia as a cultural super power either.

  6.  @John_Smith_86  Those countries have much military potential, but are just choosing to not use it. Russia is the opposite. It have inherited lots of military gear from the Soviet union that it no longer know how to make. The military is struggling due to corruption, outdated military doctrine, worthless logistical system and Generals appointed due to nepostism and loyalty to Putin rather than due to skill. Russias economy can simply no longer afford to keep the old Soviet mass army alive. Low birthrates and a weak economy makes that unsubstainable. Nor can russia keep up in a technological arms race with the west as the country still not have managed to put a 5th generation fighter into production. Meanwhile have western countries started to develop 6th generation fighters. This war have created many equipment losses for russia. Russian military kit have also become a laughingstock around the world that will harm future arms sales. And that in combination for the need for russia to focus production for their own needs rather than exports will make it incredibily difficult for russia to develop any weapons in the future as it will not be able to let other countries pay for its development through exports to the same extent now when exports goes down. And to make matters even worse are China and India catching up to russian technology, and may one day no longer have any need to import any weapons from russia at all.

  7. I also forgot to say that soft power matters. Soldiers fight when they got something to lose like their freedom and good way of life. And men who are opressed, have no freedom and no standard of living do not have much reason to fight for their country. Having an attractive free country attracts foreign talent. People with big brains or much money. And that could translate to superior economic and military might. But if you an opressive state with no future, then of course will people try to flee from it, like how people fled to the west across the Berlin wall. And jewish scientists fled from Germany and helped USA develop the nuclear bomb before the nazis did. And having well recognized brands also helps the economy. In reality do russia care much about soft power as it spends lots of money on bots to manipulate western public opinion. Its sad really. That money could have been spent on eradicating poverty in russia instead, and thus helping russia gaining real soft power, instead of a fake phasade that only exist in the fantasy world of russian propaganda.

  8.  @John_Smith_86  A country that claims to be a super power but cannot score among say the top 8 countries in terms of economic strength or population size... which is beyond pathethic. So no Russia is not a super power. Its not even a great power. And given its pathethic performance on the battlefields in Ukraine do I not think this military deserve any higher ranking in military matters either.

You make the claim that russia is a Great power - without providing any proofs for that claim. And now you resort to personal attacks out of desperation - which is a typical sign of someone who has lost a debate. If you really think that russia deserves a seat among the table of the big boys, then make your case and prove it. Because I do not consider russia a great power. Russia claims it have the right to decide over other countries because it is a great power. But then I want to see proofs for that. I think I am just doing russia a favor by making it give up on its silly imperalist dreams. Instead of bloated military spending could they invest in toilets for all the 35 million russians that lacks a toilet at home.

  10.  @evgeniya7853  For those who are ignorant can I tell that Sweden conquered Moscow in 1610. And you say that Italy have nothing to do with Rome, but that is just a matter of opinion. There are those who say that the Soviet union and Tsarist Russia have nothing to do with the Russian federation either.

  11.  @evgeniya7853  Clearly do Russia not have the consent from the peoples of eastern Europe if they wanna be ruled over by russia. So it is an empire. An empire that now have leader who wants to take back historical lands it had lost in World war 1. Just like uncle Dolphy wanted to retake Germanys historical lands it had lost in World war 1. Stalin did the same. And in the 1990s there was Milosevic in Serbia who tried to reunite old historical lands against the will of the people who lived there in Slovenia, Bosnia, Kosovo and so on. And the result of all projects mentioned was always wars and genocide. For that reason am I an enemy of ethno-nationalism and imperialism. I see it as my goal to end this ideology, and all countries including russia should accept the principles of the Westphalian peace. If russia wants Ukraine back into its empire, then it should be through flowers and chocolate, flirting, compliments and love and a marriage based on love. And not through "forced marriage" against Ukraines will, or against the will of Georgia, Estonia, Kazakstahn and so on.
