As a Swedish leftwinger I feel nostalgic about the period before thé Swedish welfare state was smashed and the country joined the EU. Most things worked better then. I am not saying that everything was better back then. There are much about the internet age that I like. However, I think that the internet age could have been implemented also in an old school socialdemocrat Sweden that was not part of the EU, so I do not see any upsides of the EU or neoliberalism in general. Its just an unnecessary evil IMHO.

One thing I can see is a lot of nostalgia when looking in at other countries. In the anglosphere are there lots of exaggerated cozyness around the new deal and the civil rights movement. And politicians loves to brand their current age projects to appeal to an audiance that feel nostalgic about the New Deal in the 1930s or the post war civil rights movement... and some people seems to feel nostalgic about that time period even if they did not live back then. I guess people feel a bit empety when there are no big struggles left to fight.. most of the job has already been done, nazism is almost dead, most of the worst inequalities and injustices between men and women, and whites and blacks are now gone. SJWs tries to pretend that their struggle are just as heroic as that of Martin Luther King and pretend that no progress has been done at all on the gender equality front, despite women now can vote, take a higher education, work in almost every profession, and being equal under the law... and in many cases even having a priviligied position compared to men.. like being less likely to go to jail, being more likely to win child custody cases and live longer. There are of course still hardships for women and blacks that needs to be done away with. But pretending that no progress at all has been done is just dishonest.

When it comes to nostalgia in other countries do Ostpolitik in Germany come to mind. They like to think of the friendship that was built by the former enemies Germany and Russia. And they like to believe that friendship and peace and trade that made countries richer somehow made all future wars impossible. This has become dogma in German thinking. Elderly have a hard time thinking another world is possible. And when they see that trade does not guarantee the creation of peace (Germanys large trade with Russia, did not put an end to its militaristic imperialist ambitions in Ukraine)... then do many of them just put the head in the sand rather than looking the truth in the eyes, and change their political position and update their worldview. And scrap this flawed idea.
