There's an old story about a traveling salesman who checked into the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, VA at the end of the 19th century.  Feeling depressed and that he couldn't go on, the salesman climbed out on the ledge of the top floor to end it all.  A crowd began to gather below and some of the rowdies were calling for him to jump.  A minister of the Gospel happened along and silenced the rowdies. He then called to the man to go back inside. The salesman said "No, I'm going to jump."  The minister yelled "Think of you father and mother!"  The salesman said they were both long dead.  The minister cried, "Then think of your wife and children!" The salesman answered, "I have no children, and I was never married. I'm going to jump!"  Finally, the minister removed his hat and said, "Son... think of General Robert E. Lee!"  The salesman yelled "THE HELL WITH ROBERT E. LEE!!!"  The minister yelled back, "THEN GO AHEAD AND JUMP YOU DAMNED YANKEE BASTARD!!!"
