  8. Let's hope the Chinese social credit system found you acceptable. I once dated a lady from Wuhan who was working in the US and met several other Chinese people who were also working and studying here. The impression that I got was that I would be welcome in visiting China..... as long as I wasn't a "troublemaker". Apparently "social harmony" is very big concept in China and, as long as you 'go with the flow' and don't seem openly critical of China, they are welcoming. I also spoke with an American friend who married a Chinese lady who confided that, when visiting China, don't upset any locals. If you do, and the authorities show up, there will be about one hundred "witnesses" stating that you are a "troublemaker" and need to be dealt with by the police.... and a trip to the police station will require either some Chinese friends in local good standing, a pocketful of cash, or both. So, arguing with a merchant or a drunk or belligerent citizen is never a good idea for a foreigner.

  13. My friend, there is not going to be less surveillance there, there is going to be more surveillance here. Sadly, we condemn China and then are all too eager to do the same things. It makes no sense.

  14. It makes you appreciate just how tenuous your freedom is in some places. Even in the US you can run into some unscrupulous people who, although it may be harder to do so, can make your life pretty miserable for a while. We should ALL keep our freedom and our civil rights in mind when we vote, even in local elections, and never take our rights for granted.
