@woofbarkyap interesting you should make that point - the "h" sound in front of French derived words in English is fairly recent, and the correct pronunciation would have not had it. This still exists in some words such as "hostler" where the h is silent. It is also acceptable to use either 'a' or 'an' in front of some nouns that begin with h e.g. "an hotel". The background to this new pronunciation is derived from the over-correction from people taught not to drop their aitches (or "haitches" as they would probably say today).

@woofbarkyap the addition of an "h" sound at the start of "hospital" is a relatively new addition to British English - it used to be pronounced silently, as in "honour".
