@p.s.shnabel3409 earthquakes are not unique to Japan, but it seems to be unique in using it as an excuse to not heat their homes.

@bennyboy5374 Japan is not the only country to have earthquakes and most areas will not have a devastating earthquake or tsunami. There are lots of 100 year old homes in Japan. Also, all modern homes and apartment buildings will survive an earthquake. Tsunamis are rare.

@mipuist the Japanese winter is fairly long - it's cold for about four months of the year.

@anasaulea2105 - you could easily adapt Finnish design to been earthquake proof.

@bennyboy5374 no you didn't - all you said is that everything is destroyed by earthquakes or tsunamis. Firstly, that is untrue, and secondly, you can build with much thicker walls in earthquake regions - many do.

@bennyboy5374 It is incorrect to say that "everything is destroyed by earthquakes or tsunamis" - in fact, very little is destroyed by them.

@bennyboy5374 The shrine in Ise is not rebuilt every 20 years because it is "crappy" - the rebuilding is a religious practice. It is also not in the Japanese culture to build "crappy" - Japanese workmanship has always been revered. The cars, and other products built for export were more because Japan did not have existing large scale manufacturing, and had to upscale very quickly and compete on price with established foreign manufacturers. It quickly surpassed foreign manufacturers in terms of quality because of the Japanese mentality to produce high quality goods, not "crappy" goods as you erroneously claim. Your comments suggest that you know rather less about the Japanese psyche than you claim. However, Japanese houses are built with an intended lifetime of about 30 years - it is assumed that the house will be pulled down after the occupants die because people do not want a "second hand" house.

@mipuist Tokyo is thankfully warmer, but the whole Tohoku region gets pretty cold. For example, you will still see snow on the ground in March. And even in Tokyo in March, the average nighttime low temperature is 5C and if you are in a poorly insulated building, this makes it very cold when it is time to wake up in the morning, the inside temperature not being much warmer than the outside temperature.
