  1. As a non-American, I feel sad watching this. US undergraduate degrees are relatively low-skilled anyway - usually more of a stepping stone to a masters. Rarely do you utilize your degree in practice. The purpose of a degree is to grow your brain, and to get better at the really useful stuff - assimilating large amounts of information quickly, identifying key parts, and processing it into something useful. And it really helps if you love the underlying topic. Don't waste years studying Econometrics if you love History - you will come out better developed and having had a better time with the subject you got really into.

  2.  @ineedaname8250  it's a shame and quite myopic to not appreciate the different insights that can be offered. I went to a top university, did politics and am now in corporate finance, so really the degree subject is ultimately bullshit. However, I don't agree that just because lectures and notes are online you can get the same level on knowledge. It's the work you are set, the feedback you get from professors and discussions in class that are a key part of the process. Saying that, I'm now reading something online from Morgan Stanley ("Wanted: non-finance recruits who can see the forest from the trees") who says that "students of history, geography or languages" are valued. Law too, obviously. As well as hiring students of philosophy and religion. They look for "transferable skills ". So I don't think the situation is quite as grim as you suggest.

  3. Friend of mine did psychology - he is now a top advertising copywriter and well-known in the industry. Seems like the perfect degree for those who want to get into advertising.

  4.  @sarahmccarthy8293  my degree taught me how to think analytically, organise information and data from different sources and construct arguments. So yes, I use my degree every day. The degree title has nothing to do with my actual job.

  6.  @Hentai_Senpa169  IT created by people and used by people. Operating systems, search algorithms and the process of creating user friendly systems is reliant on IT. Did you search for this specific video or did it find its way onto your feed? If the latter, you are a good example of where IT meets psychology. Psychology is actually one of the best degrees for a career in IT.

And to quote from an article: "Big tech now employs mental health experts to use persuasive technology, a new field of research that looks at how computers can change the way humans think and act. This technique, also known as persuasive design, is built into thousands of games and apps, and companies like Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft rely on it to encourage specific human behavior starting from a very young age." While this article does not approve of it, it is clear that psychology now a key element of humans relationship with technology. And the algorithms employ all sorts of technology, but it is fully integrated with human psychology. This is why psychology is a great degree for someone interested in a career in IT. And just to add, if everyone working in technology has done the same type of degree, you get the same type of people. And that isn't great - diversity of mentality helps.

  8.  @ineedaname8250  my best friend did a history degree and was snapped up by an investment bank straight out of his undergraduate degree, but I'm not American. But the point of a degree isn't just a piece of paper with "degree" on it. It is a process of education in which your brain develops by being challenged. History is not just about learning facts about the last, it is about assessing a wide range of data and opinions and collating it and forming your own opinion. This is a highly transferable skill.

IT systems are used by people, are subject to the same whims of the human brain, both in how we used them and the mistakes we make. The IT that pushed this video into your feed works die to it understanding human psychology, or at least being programmed to. Some websites are a fucking joke to operate and it’s obvious that the IT developer made something that worked in the lab but never considered how real users would operate them. I hope that goes some way to answering your question.

  15.  @xenolithhh  - just saw your other comments on the video and you appear to be looking at this with an American focus, and I guess you are right within the US, sadly. But in the UK it is less important what specific degree you do, with the obvious exception of certain jobs in STEM, but are more concerned where you do the degree, the status of the course and your overall academic performance. As such, a degree from Oxford University, often regarded as the best university in the world, will be no barrier to almost any career. Classics from Oxford will carry far mo to e weight that a degree in banking and finance from a lower ranked university.

  16. It seems to me that it is isn’t that the degrees are useless but rather that the perception of the degrees is incredibly shallow. Take History - it teaches a wide range of skills. For example: Intellectual initiative Critical reflection The ability to gather, organise and deploy evidence, data and information The ability to extract key elements from complex information, including listening in a discerning manner The ability to identify and solve problems The ability to select and apply appropriate methodologies The ability to assess the meaning and significance of information Analytical, evaluative and critical thinking Estimation of the relevance of information Discriminating between opposing theories Forming judgement on the basis of evidence The ability to engage in lateral thinking, openness to creative thinking The ability to marshal arguments coherently, lucidly and concisely (With thanks to the university of Cambridge)

  27.  @Ssm19494  as a banker who has worked in financial services for 20 years, studying philosophy was great for me. Logical reasoning is really important and philosophy helps a lot. In reality, it is of greater benefit than studying economics, even if employers in finance like economics grads.

  28. I work for one of the major accounting firms, and we do not give any preference to those who studied accounting as undergraduates. In fact, I've never interviewed someone with an undergraduate degree in accounting.

  30. In the US that's true, but not in every country. In science degrees for example, a US undergraduate degree is approximately equivalent to the first year of a UK undergraduate degree due to the early (or premature) specialisation in the UK.

  34. A friend of my daughter's is about to go and study Classics (ie Latin and Ancient Greek) at Oxford. I guarantee you she'll never use it after she graduates, but it won't hold her back.

  35.  @xenolithhh  she will probably be snapped up by a bank or consultancy firm if that’s what she wants to do. A degree in classics from Oxford opens up plenty of doors. Although probably unsurprisingly, Law is one of the most popular careers for classics graduates.

  40. One of the drawbacks of the degrees is that it attracts people who lack a bit of direction and sometimes academic ability because it's seen as quite easy. Also, it often requires good mathematical ability, and those with poor statistics struggle.

  43. I agree. I interview for an employer that you would probably apply to if you study business management, but it will give you zero advantage and is not a well regarded degree in the UK. It has a reputation as being a bit of a degree for thickos. It can be hard to get honest opinions on this matter, but even at Russell Group universities it's not a great degree.

  49. I did a bit of social anthropology and it was fascinating, but I realized that studying vast ethnographic trees of the Nuer tribe by Evans Pritchard was never going to help my career goals. Also, I wasn't that good at it. I did at least learn the correct way to say Levi Strauss.
