Second homes are a luxury. Tax them as such.

@joestaskowicz4717 OK, time for you to remove your military bases from our soil

I was listening to this live last night on FM radio - my mouth was hanging open, realising that i was listening to key point in world history.

O'Brien has been doing these "one benefit" lines fir years, even before the referendum, and no one has ever managed to give a straight answer. And yet still they call him.

@kevbillows7113 - a "southern Christian girl" is the last thing I would want in my life
11
The majority never wanted to leave, but the EU will never have us back, and I don't blame them.

Musk is following the Trump playbook. First do something outrageous, and allow people to deny that it was meant seriously, but then others normalise it, and by the following week it’s on the agenda. We saw the same with the idea of Canada becoming a US state. First it was a bit of a joke, but they said it would be a great idea. A couple of weeks later he mentions it at Davos.

@legendaryjonblue It has people. It needs money and equipment.
8
@GGBBGGBB940 he’s not an Ivan but looks like a far right Daily Mail reading boomer from the looks of his profile.
8
@VicePointGTAX-wd9iz you have provided no evidence of a shift to more left wing values in the mainstream, but there has been a huge rise in radical right wing beliefs.
8
It's exhausting enough for those living outside the US - I can't imagine what it;s like for those who have to live there.
8
And while there is a dictionary definition of socialism and one would use it in political science circles, there are many other working definitions that people use in daily life. If I ever get stuck in a conversation on socialism with someone, the first thing to do it ask them what they mean by socialism, rather that debate the dictionary definition. The reality is that nearly every economy is mixed to some degree - even the USA has a state high school system.
7
@TheRockkickass nothing has changed for you, but it has changed for people who get snatched off the streets by masked gangs because they wrote an article that someone in government didn't like.
7
@ the alarming thing about Trump is that he regards his nation's friends as enemies and its enemies as friends. I am not sure that Trump directly influenced the Brexit votes, but he sits at the head of a movement that made things like Brexit a reality.
7
No, second home owners can pay to help resolve the housing shortage that they contributed to.
6
He is an extremist by modern terms
5
And today is 1938.
5
There is no obligation on UK Radio presenters to be impartial. LBC has a mixture of left and right wing presenters who are fairly open in their views.
4
Well, James was rubbing his face in it, with the use of polite language.
4
Everyone lost and everyone is dealing with it.
4
@VicePointGTAX-wd9iz these people have changed and there has been hardly any growth in the far left. No one is standing on a platform of public ownership of the means of production. However, there has been a clear growth in the far right. You can take the political compass test to see where your views align on a test that hasn't changed for decades.
4
That's economic nonsense. Obviously some do, but the majority of rich people become rich by providing a service that other people wish to buy. Often that is through a new innovation or by supplying the service more efficiently, and this more cheaply
4
She beat Rishi Sunak with here amazing skill of being white, like the party membership.
4
It wasn't free, but the US war loans were absolutely vital to the war effort. The reason they were repaid in 2006 was not because the loans were onerous, but because we were given a very long time to repay them and because they were very cheap, so we're not a drain on the UK - by the time they were finally repaid, the debt was nominal.
4
@ericchild3363 I understood the point he was trying to make, ludicrous as it is, but that explains nothing about his support for far right movements, such as AfD. And this is what he refused to answer, instead babbled away about his interpretation of what Trump is hoping to achieve in space.
3
@theend9494 nothing. He also isn't one of Trump's cronies and I expect that he's retired given that he's 94.
3
@bettablue2660 - hope you enjoyed this show - James O'Brian is an excellent interviewer. Not sure I quite see how you could immigrate "back" to France though if you weren't born there.
3
I can't see any of these comments. Why haven't you replied to them? If course you know that these are unlikely to be serious calls, even if they were there. And I bet you never equally condemn calls from the extreme right for violence.
3
He probably took CSEs, the less academic equivalent to O- levels, which were abolished in 1987.
3
@benstern310 an impact of allowing massive immigration AND not building enough properties is a housing shortage. However, this has always been a problem in areas like Dorset and Devon that can be reached from the SE easily and are often bought with inherited money or remortgaging. These areas do not have a lot of immigration, but have always suffered the impact of weekend cottages depriving locals of homes of their own. As I said at the start, second properties are a luxury, and in a time of shortage, they should be taxed as a luxury. And if you can afford that tax, you have nothing to worry about.
3
The topic today on Radio North Norfolk Digital is "What's your favourite cheese?" with your host James O'Brien.
3
Problem is, he doesn't know what traditional or new Marxism means.
3
@Cal-Valhalla what on earth are you talking about?
3
@unitysprings3631 nonsense. He was appointed legally. The 11th circuit will reverse Cannon on appeal and kick her off the case.
3
Ukraine has been defending itself with money from Europe and the USA for three years. There is $308bn of Russian money in European banks. So yes, Europe probably can continue to fund the war effort for some years to come.
3
Reading between the lines of this post, we can pretty much guess your opinions on a wide range of issues, and it is deeply unpleasant.
3
@retrorampage484 - like Trump, it is easier to become hugely wealthy if you started with fantastic inherited wealth. But on his specific mandate - to improve government efficiency, don't you think that the contracts that his space company has with the US government might be a conflict of interest?
2
@retrorampage484 one thing that the previous Trump administration showed us is that conflicts of interest were to be exploited, not respected.
2
@twinatoms given that Musk has Trump's ear, what he "recommends" will likely go through unchallenged.
2
If the rich southern owners can easily absorb this, then no problem- let’s make the charge on second properties even higher.
2
Perhaps more like listening to the BBC's World Service as dar as the accents are concerned.
2
@ericchild3363 had any counter arguments been presented, then sure. But it the clip presented, there were like, other than a guy called Robert who was rambling about interplanetary non-sequitar.
2
@aupaaupa2377 I have zero Gaelic, but I can only think that you said, "that Scottish caller was an idiot" or words to that effect.
2
It's illegal to sell a knife to an under 18 in the UK, just like you can't sell a beer to one. Age needs to be verified at the point of delivery.
2
@mrreeree3633 firstly, the second home tax would not apply to a property that is rented out, but only to properties that are unoccupied. And yes, they can sell the property and the person who buys it can then love in it as a home. It helps the everyday person because more of them will be able to buy a home to live in.
2
@mrreeree3633 this has nothing to do with landlords - the second home tax wouldn't apply to houses that are occupied by tenants. It would apply to properties that are not occupied full-time and owned as a second property.
2
@benstern310 I would like to specifically tax second houses more because they are a luxury at a time of a housing shortage. And the extra income generated will hopefully allow some actual improvements. It has nothing to do with others having a little bit more than me. As someone who has power of attorney over another house (one that has recently become empty) and one that I'm likely to inherit, I essentially do have a second property, at least in the short-term. But I do not intend to own two properties when there is a massive shortage of property. What I will not do is leave a property standing empty for 90% of the year so that I can enjoy it (also it's worth over a million, so I'd quite like the money LOL).
2
He gave him ample opportunity to explain the words he was using, which the caller refused or was unable to do.
2
Listen mate
2
Ah bless. Did he make a fool of you too once?
