  1. That's unfortunately just an urban myth, albeit not one I had heard before. It was actually down to a specific attempt to make English spelling more phonetic and remove historic spellings that were once phonetic but are now just anachronistic.

  2. @John_Weiss  good point about the vowel pronunciation - it changes from place to place and era to era. But if we accepted that spelling was settled largely at a phonetic point, we might wonder why flour and colour are spelt the same. It was likely that they had the same pronunciation.

  4. Agree. Whe I was growing up, people did not have to carry around bottles to continually sip on. To see it these days reminds me of toddlers with a bottle of milk who want to sip something
