  3. Has the information changed? A mathematics textbook probably won't, so you can keep the old books.

  4. The answer is that the purchase of them is generally compulsory, so the textbook company is able to exploit it's monopolistic position. The key thing is to get to be the prescribed textbook for a particular course. I imagine the world behind that is very murky indeed.

  7. In the UK we don't even use textbooks. Actually, I think I bought one "textbook" in my entire time, which proved quite useful for that first year Introductory course. It was optional and cost less that the equivalent of about $45.
