  1. Sounds like an urban legend to me. If you can manage to master accentless English, you can work out the money. I was born post-decimilation but understood old money even as a child.

  2.  @mikewalrus4763  - of course there is no such thing as accentless English, but a German in 1940s Britain would have had a strong accent. But if this German had mastered the English accent they would surely also be capable of mastering the money. It's not that difficult.
