  8. 3:35 what do you mean “language dependent typing”? Protbufs, OpenAPI, WSDL, HTML, various ISO model layers, etc are all basically languages for the purposes of transferring data. Any time you use them you have to support this exchange format/protocol. They all suffer from that same thing. There’s too many standards to define data structure and communication protocols.

Like if using interfaces/traits to assign behaviour, at some point you need a way to require a thing that implements multiples of these interfaces/traits, at which point you’d probably introduce a new interface that implement these interfaces. So classes and subclasses aren’t where the complexity exists or where it’s defined. The classes are just implementing the complexity.

Unfortunately, if you don’t expand your skillset and remain in the top 90% in those skillsets as you rise in the corporate ladder, you are going to lack the skills to reason effectively about the cross-domain solutions on offer. Decision making will be based on the most understandable idea or based on political power. Also, most people really seem to struggle with future think and understanding large prerequisites to get to some future state in say 5-10 years.

The OO code example given is purposefully but not obviously bad. In real life, the MyCalc instance would likely be an interface or some superclass and either be injected via a method parameter, or be an instance property.

For all other languages, you don’t know if a method call is going to throw or not, or what it’s going to throw. I think err != null just hides the problem a little. It’s like Ruby’s rescue nil. Very convenient when you don’t care.

Whats worse, this proposal isn’t considering an improved syntax. It’s implementing the same clunky verbose API used in reactive libraries. It’s going to pollute JS codebases with unnecessary weight and impose an ugly design on them.

A good ORM will be one that does not map classes to table records, but instead abstracts the queries and maps classes to the query’s result sets.

  40. Does any language do the opposite of async/await? As in, all methods are synchronous, but you can background them. E.g in a method, you may want to make two simultaneous calls to some external API. So you background them, then stop and wait for both. I’m meaning language support, not just Task.WaitAll(tasks). I think the closest may be channels in Go????

  45. 33:10 the argument still isn’t convincing me. When you really break it down, properties and methods are really used for the same thing in principle, to update or retrieve some data. Why should we care that one has a () and one doesn’t, or one uses = value rather than (value). You could maybe argue that a property relates to a specific area in memory, but this is then tightly coupling to some lower level concept that may be the hardware or some abstraction between the hardware and the language. So really, a property is an abstract concept of some useful data that we want to be able to use in our program. The question is, is that property something we want to use as the API of the current instance? If I think a property, computer or otherwise, perfectly fits the API I want for my instances, I want to be able to use it.

Software costs and maintenance are no different to running a lab or a factory… known ongoing costs… fall short of covering the costs or not keeping up maintenance, then the lab/factory will fail, same with software. It’s actually a pretty simple concept. And simple cost benefit analysis. Do we outsource or do we do it internally? It shouldn’t matter that it’s “more complex” because as long as you can hire the right people and the cost is lower than outsourcing, then you’re more profitable.

  50.  @xnoreq  what you’re talking about is the problem of accumulating changes in branches. Of course accumulating changes can and do cause conflicts. The problem you’ll find in reality though, is people don’t know how to break down larger tasks into smaller tasks that can be merged into master/main regularly without breaking the system. So sure you can say “just do CI”, but a logic and natural response is “how”. It’s the how that is hard and takes training. It’s a trade off. A dev should be able to be informed enough to be able to make an informed choice.
