Non-software engineers do not have the necessary training and expertise to manage/lead software projects. Software isn’t like other projects/programs in other parts of the organisation. The same project management techniques do not apply. Add to that, software engineers have actually been taught how to correctly gather requirements, how to build it, manipulate, manage complexity, etc etc. Further, these skills don’t just apply to software, but are transferable to manage other systems like business processes and organisational structures. We have literally been taught how to refactor systems and processes whereas these skills haven’t been taught to other professions. Software engineers should be the new managers for most things related to any systems and processes. The current “product owners” should be relegated to a stakeholder status and provide expertise advice in their relevant field only. I’ve had it with non-software engineers making stupid decisions just because they don’t understand and don’t have the training.
