Not everyone can simply work their way out of poverty. You can't say the system works when it's only a tiny fraction of people who actually manage to work their way out. Poverty can't and won't be eliminated through hard work. As a society and as a species we need to change the structures that allow rich ghouls to exploit the labour of workers and leverage starvation wages against the threat of being homeless and destitute. As for socialist countries that aren't shit holes, well the closest thing we have to socialist states are places like Vietnam, Cuba and Finland, Norway, Sweden. There shouldn't be any billionaires, that amount of money is only accumulated through exploitation. With a focus on workers rights, an aggressive wealth tax and strong social welfare state and redistribution there wouldn't be any billionaires. No one deserves a billion dollars. Pretending billionaires are just a fact of life and that they would be present in a socialist government is unfounded and stupid. The goal is to take the power out of the hands of the capitalists and put it in the hands of the people, who elect a government that represents them and ensures that no one has the means of exploiting workers and becoming a billionaire. The world bank sets what constitutes poverty and has done so in a way that makes it seem like more people have escaped poverty than ever before when in fact there are more people living in poverty than any other time in human history. More people are food insecure than ever before. More people are without shelter and income than ever before. Capitalism can't solve these problems because capitalism created these problems.   125. Joe is right on that one, capitalism is the cause of pollution and inequality, that's an irrefutable fact. Capitalism has not lifted people out of poverty, there are more people in poverty today than any other time in human history. The world bank sets the poverty line to artificially reflect a decrease in poverty when the opposite us true. The people in control all of the money redefine what constitutes as poverty to make it seem like they have had an overall positive impact when the opposite is true. Cuba has less homeless people than the United States, because if their socialist policies and strong welfare state. They have achieved this despite being a very poor country that has been the target of economic warfare for decades from a world superpower.
