Sometimes, people need tutorials and analysis.
1
@SmallSpoonBrigade the problem is that Linux drivers only work on Linux, because they use a module system designed only for it.
1
Who needs batch files when you can just add to /bin and type the command? You'll still need .desktop files, but those are slightly better.
1
It basically simulates Wayland on X.org.
1
Specialty. Just like FreeNAS and AV Linux.
1
distrowatch.com You're welcome
1
Meson/Ninja?
1
Arch is a great distro both to use and to fork, since the AUR will always be current. But you could say the same thing about Fedora COPR and Ubuntu's PPAs. And once you have the solid base, you can make your distro do something unique without worrying about outdated repos.
1
Somehow.
1
Editing, recording, rendering, and compositing video is a textbook usage of a Unix workstation
1
@dogtools1005 In their defense, most Linux users are set in their choice of internals, and only need to choose a good UI.
1
Switched to Linux is all three of them. Sort of.
1
@GauteAnimationNorway it converts directx calls to Vulcan calls. If your gpu doesn't support Vulcan, it is either making the CPU do it with Zink, converting to OpenGL (but I haven't seen any examples of this), or running it on a less-powerful secondary graphics system.
1
I wonder if you could compile proprietary driver binaries as Guix packages.
1
There are container formats which can share dependencies.
1
Practically all distros have Linux in the name
1
Which shell? I use Bash, but I'm open to Zsh, and I see the appeal of Csh and Fish if you like C or Lua.
1
The directory structure and the fact that it hasn't been updated in decades.
1
Does anyone use Bedrock as a daily driver? It's the one distro where repos are a nonissue.
1
Never Syu
1
@DMSBrian24 BSD is monolithic
1
I checked the website, they do mention the suckless suite, and it does seem that they started by forking dwm, but they forked it so much it's less than 40% original code. Also, I love Nautilus, but I prefer Nemo.
1
@source8093 It was and remains one of the first distros meant to be easy for everyday use.
1
@DistroTube I knew it was south of North Carolina, but I couldn't tell beyond that.
1
They could just provide the binary and a list of dependencies
1
@Bob Landers Well then just a few aliases and change all the themes, and suddenly, to everyone else, you're running harmless Ubuntu.
1
Or the "garage" is a network of dedicated users.
1
I started on Fedora, and installed a whole bunch of DEs just for fun. Say what you will about Ubuntu, it's expanding the user-base of Linux every day, and Dell now ships laptops with it preinstalled to cut down on the Windows surcharge if buyers want to save some money. The only reason I have been reluctant to try Ubuntu is that it has a reputation for being a bit heavy on the preinstalled software, and being comparatively slow. I think I know why people say Ubuntu's tools are slower, because I've recently tried out an Arch distro, and pacman is blazing fast.
1
Those can be seen as core by technicality, since core distros are usually unintuitive to use and can be very minimal.
1
@kjullthedemon no. It's essentially a modern version of BASIC for x86_64.
1
It's a very good minimalistic install of a basic systemd-based Linux system
1
This is why microkernels are a thing. I'd love for someone to take the code of Linux and reorganize it into a tiny version of itself. It could be called linux-micro or something.
1
I'm testing out Wayfire right now, but I like K as much as the next person. Shame about the Qt Company tho.
1
@jlbeeen I think both GTK and Qt support them in some way, shape, or form. Both KDE and Budgie have native desktop widgets, and Conky works too, but I don't know if Conky is interactive.
1
I'm used to Fedora, and I like the selection of DEs, but I am currently tinkering with Wayfire Linux, a Manjaro spin that comes with Wayfire set up already. Getting a better panel is hard, though, because Wayland.
1
Not having control groups can be annoying, but pure Unix does have its advantages.
1
@unpaintedcanvas What is this, Monty Python? Of course I've got a license to ask for licenses!
1
@anasseddafir4215 Then are you using Guix…?
1
@Andrew I'm just saying Guix is NixOS sans systemd.
1
Alpine as well. But what does that make PMOS?
1
Pamac is more like Synaptic for Arch packages.
1
I like their emphasis on GTK. It means other teams have constant access to the latest frameworks which take advantage of new technology. Without GTK, we would have no Xfce.
1
Tiling is traditional. Floating is nontraditional. Before Windows and Next released in their iconic forms, tiling was the norm, and in fact was the interface of Windows pre-3.
1
@terrydaktyllus1320 it's not about what the user would actually use. Every OS can have a terminal emulator. It's that BeOS doesn't have a text-mode shell running constantly in the background, and all text interfaces run on top of the graphical session.
1
@random6033 or disable snapd and add another repository.
1
I most often use a menu I open with a keybinding. Or I use a run prompt. Or I use a hot corner. I like all of them.
1
It wouldn't have been Mac OS X in that case, because BeOS isn't anything close to Unix. They would have had to call it OS 10 instead.
1
I would use KDE, if only Qt were fully open-source.
1
Only recently did I discover why it's called Rawhide. I think it's because the distro's rollin' rollin' rollin'
1
@SmallSpoonBrigade BSD is missing drivers for a bunch of network, graphics, and sound devices. Even open-source drivers need to be forked a little to play nice with the BSD module system.
