With all due respect for Mr Ackerman in Mr Bremmer's piercing intervew, there is something that must be said. Briefly, as an overseas viewer and someone far-removed from the Afghanistan debacle, what is odd to me is that we don't hear is any criticism of the Secretary of Defense Austin. Why were things so poorly organized for the American military in the Afghanistan retreat? Why were young soldiers barely out of basic training in charge of weeding out the Afghans getting on US and allied planes to flee their country? Surely, the Secretary of Defense in America would have known months in advance that they would be leaving. Lastly, Americans and their allies should not feel guilt for the tremendous loss of national prestige and world-wide condemnation of the withdrawal from Afghanistan, because after twenty years of pouring in enough blood and treasure to create a new country, the Afghans who were in charge melted into obscurity as if no one had been trying to help them; they willingly handed over the keys to the kingdom to a band of rabble--rousers hiding behind ancient texts to underline their self-importance.
