Do we ever really know anyone? Former President LIncoln probably heard what he wanted to hear from Johnson, saw what he wanted to see and believed what he wanted to believe about him. It's a mistake to realize that Lincoln was not in the mental minefield most of us inahabit; he had his own demons like the rest of us and the plain simple truth of the matter is that even in our best friends, we see what we want to see in them and often other friends we have will not like that person for their own reasons, while we find them terrific for a bevy of reasons.
