  1. Nice question Lex. As a sculptor, I agree with Mr Cowen’s appreciation of the two sculptures of Michelangelo. To carve out of stone and liberate the figures within a block of granite to such perfection is something that rises above what seems to be humanly possible. Idem for the Vermeer. It would be interesting to know what Mr Cowen thinks of the recent NFT, JPG file that sold for 69 million USD. My personal view of modern art is that I believe there are artists and there are technicians who do art but aren’t really artists who ‘have’ to do their work. The JPG file art work is a technician’s piece to me. A good example of technician-artist is Jeff Koons who commissions his works of steel to be made by artisans in a factory and then sell his ‘sculptures’ for tens of millions of dollars. Who am I to say he’s not doing art? I can only offer an opinion, but I don’t mean to judge others who work in the art scene.
