Both of your views on AI make the planets tremble just a bit, but what I think is going to happen is that we are going to continue building AI machines until the robot-like human comes into being. This robot-like human will one day take off on its own trajectory and will never align itself with human values once it has cut all ties with us. This is where Sam's analysis will probably come into being: the machines will out do us on every possible level. We will lose every time in their game of chess until we pull back and get out of their way. The synthetic-beings we will have created will go their own way too. What I believe is coming down the pike is that we will be creating the beings we thought one day we ourselves could be, but of course, we will never be super-human. It's the parallel robo-human race that will conquer and colonize the known galaxies---in our image. Here is where I think humans will have peace of mind. The new robo-humans might go to war against us, but it will only make us stronger and the will to survive goes above intelligence. We will keep our biological presence and simply acknowledge that we will be the gods of the new robo-human race we will one day create. I can see both of your reaching for the whiskey bottle, Lex, Sam, it is after all Friday evening!
