Your father-in-law may not have had dealings with Putin on certain issues never made public, but the Helsinki meeting of more than 2 hours, where afterwards both translators' notes were ordered to be burned and not made public and with former President Trump refusing to reveal what he and Putin talked about are things that do not add up to anything else but suspicion that something was going on between those two.
