If we step back from our borders and look at ourselves as part of the human community, we can see that the Ukrainian conflict is the keystone in making sure that President Putin's Russia does not merge with Xi Jinping's China. Authoritarian states are simply stonger than democratic ones because they figured out long ago that fear will trump the idea of freedom for people and keep them from developing any sense of individuality or desire to question the dictums of the state. For the survival of the human family as a species where individual rights are revered and respected, we have to realize that Ukraine show us cleary without any doubts that authoritarian regimes and democratic countries can no longer co-exist on the Earth. It's not to say democratic countries are faultless and not prone to every form of corruption that exists, but they do allow people to have at least the belief that they live in a free society and can vote in or vote out of office canditates as they wish and live their dreams. Ukraine proves this point in vivid technicolor; autocratic regimes despise free countries.
