I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that what many of us in the west cannot understand is how the people in the autocratic regimes seem to become mesmerized by these strongmen who promise the world and demand total obedience. Why, how can anyone not want to be able to be free to think what one wants and speak the words one wants to speak without constant fear of retribution I will never understand, but there they are: the Russians love their strongman. The Chinese want to give even more power to President Xi and we see zero protests. This is a very bad sign for us in democracies, because we will go to war when needed, but then we turn off the war mentality and try to enjoy life. In the autocratic regimes, the war light never goes out...
