Dear PBS Eons hostess, Thank you for a very interesting videocast. I believe bats were creatures that evolved in caves, most likely from rodents and that's where their sonar ability came into being. As they honed this ability, they had probably been slowly developing an ability to get to one side of the cave or back on the cieling by jumping like flying squirrels with membrane between their claws. When they were able to jump in the air and use the echo ability to catch their prey, simply by daily practice, their organisms adapted in making them able to cover longer distances and eventually they were able to leave the caves to gather food which in turn further perfected the echo-location ability and flight. My guess is that a family of rodents were cut off in a giant cave-in in an underground cavern which is when their eyes became useless the echo-location ability developped. Be well.

Thanks for a very enlightening videocast. I believe the pterosaurs developed the ability to fly in their quest for food that needed them to be airborne to catch it. It must have been something that allowed them to jump from cliffs or tree to tree. Eventually, they conquered flight by developing enough skin and that expanded their food gathering ability to go for larger animals, which in turn allowed them evolve into the huge reptiles they became, as they could eat larger and larger prey. Flight was a bi-product of getting enough food. Like so many things in nature, one ability morphed into using it to increase their food gathering abilities. They were the kings of the skies and it must have been something else to see a flock of them circling overhead.
