  1. One other hypothesis is that it's essentially a vestigial feature, from that time that human ancestors were covered in hair all across our bodies. The only criterion for whether a feature is passed down from generation to generation is whether the carriers of that specific gene survive to reproductive age (and are fertile). Maybe pubic hair isn't all that useful after all - but it's not so harmful as to have created a selective pressure against it. (In the same way it's annoying that you get sand in your eyes - but it probably won't ever kill you). (I'm not saying I believe this hypothesis, just acknowledging that it exists :D)
