@mrspoopy3227 Are you really trying to quote segregationist laws at me as though there's any realistic comparison? This is like equivocating the Saudis' ban on women drivers (only lifted recently) and the law that allows traffic officers to issue parking tickets.

@tstocker6926 There are legitimate reasons to move refugees from city to city - for example, if they require medical attention, or a facility reaches capacity. Trump's reason, by contrast, is one of the illegitimate ones. It's not for their own immediate good - it's purely an act of spite against his political opponents.

I'm not a lawyer - but I do know that releasing immigrants into a city without proper papers and processing is a crime. Otherwise, what is you guys' problem with undocumented immigrants? For serious, the mental gymnastics you have to perform to make sense of this policy are unreal.

@jonathanardoin6630 BILL BARR released a memo which is NOT a summary. Indictments MIGHT have been done, but that would've been exclusively within DOJ - it would not have excluded the possibility that Congress might recommend impeachment. Of course, we'll not find out for a while, because for SOME unknowable reason, Republicans are obstructing the release of the full report.

Sanctuary Cities are not illegal - they simply don't provide ICE with extra information that they could use to track immigrants - it's there so that witnesses will be more likely to come forwards with actual crimes.

But law enforcement often relies on pragmatism. Which do you prefer? Rampant violent crime because vulnerable people daren't come forwards to the authorities to act as witnesses, in case they get deported? Or the toleration of some people who overstay their visas (because let's be real here, most undocumenteds are people who simply overstayed a visa - and crossed entirely legally in the first place).

By this logic, everybody who jay-walks should be fined on the spot. In practice, this is impossible, and more often than not, jay-walking laws are enforced more in order to scoop up money for the police department, rather than to actually make the streets safer. Not all crimes are equal, and law enforcement has discretion in which ones to pursue. What they choose to prioritise reflects more on the values of the department and the country than it does on the actual letter (or spirit) of the law. For better or worse, some crimes will go unpunished. The ugly choice people have to make, is whether to pursue otherwise-faultless families who haven't committed any other offences in the US, versus hardened killers and drugs dealers who may go free because nobody would testify against them. If you really think the immigrant is your main concern, than you are a very dark personality indeed.
