To everybody who hates Labour and loathes all these candidates - why precisely are you watching, again?

@jamiengo2343 But folks like you keep telling me that Labour can never win, that all these candidates are incompetents. Why are you so scared of people that you don't believe can win the election?

I think you clicked the wrong link for the Oswald Mosley fanclub homepage.

@jamiengo2343 You were mocking the politicians for rejecting yes-no questions. Ian Webster gave you an example of a question where, if you are restricted to only answering "Yes" or "No", you will be incriminating yourself. It's called a leading question, and it's something that journalists often use to create headline-grabbing soundbites. They ideally want to catch a politician saying something outrageous, or at least which can be interpreted more aggressively than the politician ever intended. Ian's example is the classic example used to illustrate the problem. Whichever answer you give, you will be validating his assertion that you beat your wife.

@jamiengo2343 That's a funny way to spell "flame war". ;) Sadly, as you see, I too am a veteran of those particular trenches. Channel 4 videos are a pretty unforgiving environment for well-meaning lefties like me, hahaha

Somehow, I doubt people in general are gonna stop quoting Churchill and start quoting Johnson...

@davethegreat "A fanatic is a man who can't change his mind, and won't change the subject." ~ Winston Churchill. (Two can play at this game!)

I came to this debate supporting Keir and very worried by the other two candidates. I have left the debate with the exact same order of preference - but I feel reassured that no matter which of them wins, the party will be in good hands - and I hope that when Keir wins, the other two will find senior positions in the new Shadow Cabinet.

@Jagbhabra As it happens, neither am I - I specifically joined Labour to support Keir Starmer's bid for the leadership. I think that out of all the candidates, he's the only one who, once he wins, can command the respect of the entire party and not just one section of it. A winning formula, by my estimation.

@jamiengo2343 This is a well known fallacy, and Ian was calling it out. If you don't know what he's talking about, you gotta read more. :)

@jamiengo2343 ... you're not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, huh? Nobody - Ian included - actually believes you're beating your wife. If you would go to the trouble of googling the question, you'd realise it's far older than this conversation, and exists as a cautionary tale against asking leading questions. (And no, please don't answer that rhetorical question at the start of this post. I don't actually believe you're a rusty piece of gardening equipment which has magically obtained Wifi access and a keyboard.)

@jamiengo2343 Phew! That's a relief. :) You won't make that mistake twice!

@jamiengo2343 I can relate on some level, to be honest. Literal-mindedness is something I'm actually prone to as well. I find it difficult to tell when people are joking versus when they are being serious - so I hope no offence was taken at my comments - I wasn't exactly charitable, haha. Most folks on the internet won't own up to a mistake though, so kudos for that. :)

@jamiengo2343 Well, still, props for not reacting aggressively - a lot of people would have. :)

@digital_oni Don't engage with obvious trolls. :) These arguments never go anywhere. From me to you, and this is said as somebody who's pretty much traversed the full spectrum of our political system, from right to left, over the course of my life already (and I'm not as old as that makes me sound) - don't let your identity get bound up with any political affiliation. Leaders will come and go, parties will change, promises will be made, kept and broken. Don't get hung up on labels, and be very careful about letting people apply labels to you (or applying labels to yourself). Keep your mind open and free, and don't get too invested in any movement. Be observant, and be curious. :)
