It's going to be an uphill battle getting people locally to agree to put their pride to one side and actually consider cooperating with the smaller parties, but if not now, when? The biggest obstacle for us right now of course is bureaucratic. I just stood in last week's elections as a paper candidate - a formality our CLP was forced to go through because party rules obligate us to stand candidates in seats we have no hope of winning, and where a Labour candidate could prove to be a spoiler for another party that we would have preferred to win. This actually happened in my very race. The Green candidate would absolutely have won it if we and the Lib Dems had stood down. The margin of Conservative victory was wafer thin, and our share of the vote would have put the Greens over the top half a dozen times over. What needs to happen is for Labour to loosen its bureaucratic grip and allow CLPs to stop wasting so much effort fielding non candidates for unwinnable races. I am relieved to hear this idea already circulating among big leagues Labour politicians but we desperately need more people asking for it. Without the ability to stand down, a huge potential item is removed from the table when we come to negotiate pacts.
