As a Brit, it's always something that makes me feel a little conflicted. Part of me is reassured to know that the US is around to protect us, but I also fear what would happen if it went rogue. What happens if someone worse than Trump gets elected? What happens if American nationalism turns nasty and those military bases become staging grounds for an invasion on a country like mine? I'm also concerned that since the umbrella of protection spreads across Europe, it's removed the need for us to think about self-defence. I worry that European defence capabilities have atrophied away because our militaries would be competing for space with the US. What happens if the US ceases to be there to protect us? Are we even capable of truly standing on our own any more?

@tyman2323 It's a lot harder to justify defence spending when you know that you've got an ally covering your back. The UK's entire defensive posture appears to be built on expecting the US to bail us out. I am hardly wishing to make like Trump and disband NATO - but I am saying that we have become quite dependent on the US, and the bases are part of the cause, I think.

@tyman2323 I don't think anybody in their right mind is suggesting the US should abandon all its bases in one go, right now! Haha
