Here's a thought: perhaps what we've got wrong this whole time is the idea that Trump is actually very unusual at all. Think about it: in your social life, if somebody behaved towards you the way Trump does, you'd probably push them away. So people with social dysfunction or mental illnesses tend to drop off our collective radar. They stop featuring in our social lives - we just don't have enough time, to be wasting precious hours on the likes of racist old uncles and aunts. Trouble is, just because you don't meet them any more, doesn't mean they ceased to exist - and it certainly doesn't mean they stopped voting. It's hard to keep count of how many jerks and bullies there are in the world, precisely because nobody likes to be around them.
