Unfortunately, the caller's reaction is exactly what Republicans have been shooting for over a course of years now. Every time the word "racist" has come up, they've played the "you can't call everybody you disagree with racist" card. And on mainstream American media, that has allowed them to program in an instinctive dislike of accusations of racism - no matter how well founded those accusations might turn out to be. It also serves to take racism off the table as an acceptable reason to criticise somebody - now, calling out racism is more heavily stigmatised than racism itself. And that is just plain wrong.
