  3.  @jaytbo5676  On the contrary, the areas that have seen the highest population growth since the industrial revolution are the poorest regions. This idea that "people needed more children because of farming and high child mortality" is pure conjecture. The biggest driver behind the decline in fertility is the massification of contraceptives, which tends to follow economic development. Our societies are not oriented towards the development of people anymore, but instead place economic growth ahead of everything else.

  7. ⁠ @jaytbo5676  You’re on acid if you believe that someone working $7.25 an hour can afford a house in a major urban area just by saving 20% monthly. Even at $15 per hour, assuming you’re working 40+ hours a week consistently every week (which is a very big if) and before tax or any other expenses, in ten years you’d only have $57,600 at minimum if my mental math is correct. It’s possibly slightly higher depending on how many more hours over 40 you worked on average per week, so lets be extremely generous and round up to $60,000. Plenty of money but nowhere near enough to afford a decent enough place to raise a family in the middle of nowhere, let alone a major city.

  9.  @jaytbo5676  Ok, let me redo the mental math but show proof. $15 per hour times 40 hours is $600 a week. 4 weeks in a month means in total it is $2400. 12 months in a year, $28,800. Times 10 years, $288,000. Multiplied by .2, that’s 57,600, so no, my math wasn’t wrong. And no, you can’t afford a house with >$60k. Maybe a down payment but all things considered it’s unlikely you’d be able to afford mortgage payments. I think you’re just out of touch with reality.

  10.  @jaytbo5676  I’m not calculating taxes here, I’m taking 80% off because of your claim that someone working for minimum wage could afford a house simply by saving 20% of their income for 5 to 10 years (I went with 10 years because it was simpler to calculate and it was the upper limit you set in your claim).
