  1.  @invertXtrogdor  it’s also worth pointing out that the Subway is by no means the only local rail system. A few of my American railfan friends didn’t know about the “low level train” network! (They are elevated or cut and cover/“trenched” — much cheaper to build than a fully tunnelled subway, so easier to expand and revise.)
