  2. I didn’t realise that about steel production. I guess once it’s all automated, the same economic calculus that led to outsourcing… becomes “why are we spending all this money on oceanic shipping if we can build an automated factory near the end uses?”. Huh.

I understand you didn’t want to accidentally make a whole video about the problems with company towns, but it’s also worth noting that company towns also served to keep most workers’ wages reinjected into the company rather than dispersing into the wider economy. And they also had their own private “police”/security, and stuff like that. I know you said “not so great for the workers”, so it’s not like you ignored that aspect, but yeah!
