@spacetoast7783 this is why the shareholders should also be the workers, the workers should be the shareholders. Everyone has an incentive for the business to do well because everyone gets dividends. Their wages/salaries aren’t viewed as merely a drain on the returns because they are also seeing them directly. You almost never see the board of a corporation voting to reduce their own pay, after all. Ensuring workers’ interests are represented in top-level decisions also increases the long-term stability and prosperity of businesses, and there’s a number of studies showing that. To give one examine among many, you avoid the issue of the board making a boneheaded decision that causes workers to leave for a competitor, which can sometimes completely destroy a business, as those affected can directly influence the policies they want to see.

@spacetoast7783 no, it wasn’t about what OP said, only about what you said. I’m not entirely sure why you brought up corporations and their workers when OP talked about schools misusing their money, but nevertheless, I replied to your point. (Which is missing from my screen now, did you delete it?)

@Praxeus514 yes, that’s why I mentioned a bunch of them do better in stability and profitability metrics, and touched on warehouses, cafes, restaurants, factories, etc which operate in that way. Some do have public equity too though, such as allowing all recurring customers to also be shareholders. There’s banks that give all account holders a payout each year based on how much profit they made, divided up amongst everyone. And so on.

@_Aemse I wasn’t already familiar with that, so I just read the Wikipedia page, but as far as I can tell, that’s simply a standard private company? If they did even light measures like a simple equity option, I didn’t see it, but I may have missed a paragraph. May I ask what basis you said this? If you read something that made my worker-ownership thing sound familiar to you about them, I’d like to read it, as it would be interesting for a holding company to operate in that way. Most practical examples so far are in manufacturing, restaurants, retail, and things like that. Although there’s one or two who run their own financial institutions too.

@Killer Miser recently fired and unable to get a mortgage. You had to have been doing EXTREMELY well before the crash to be able to buy those houses outright. And the crash naturally made banks more wary of mortgages and they required bigger down payments and bigger interest rates.
