+KO D Sensationalism (dragging them on camera) is as distancing as ignoring. Then the "good" people can pat themselves on the shoulder - and since it is only those horrific people that are shown on TV - it does not happen in THIS neighbourhood or in our family (maybe not trafficking, like described in this case, but sexual abuse). How many men in the neighbourhood may have had sex with a prostitute that looked very young. Even if she is not a minor and it is not a crime - legally she consented to sex against money - but in the legal sense this woman also consented when she was 21. Does not mean she made a free decision. If a child is kidnapped those stories get a lot of attention. But the stranger danger is vastly overestimated - if children are abused it is usually by people that they know well and interact with often. The novelty grabs the attention, media brings the stories because they get them ratings. The viewers do not want to accept how mundane and low key and common sexual abuse is. it is much easier to watch the punishment of the rare exceptionally horrible people than to admit how large the problem is. it gets even harder if the suspects are people that we know (or think we know) and that have some standing in a community. The same people that shout for fierce punishment would chose to rather not believe a child (or a woman) than to have some very unwelcome insights. and the duty to do something - not believing protects them from that trouble.

I find it remarkable that she said that the safe house in Vancouvers was closed (lost funding) because of the winter Olympics. Those budgets make a difference, but it is not as satisfying as watching the coverage. - Don't get me wrong of course they need to be locked up. - she does not dare to return to Canada, and also did not get the authorities involved - in a rich first world country. Not even that side works (preventing damage after years of abuse). She kissed her siblings good bye. Holy shit !

The safe house in Vancouver lost the funding because of the winter Olympics in 2010 (such sports events usually see a rise in prostituion and human trafficking). - wow, way to go for a first world country. Aren't the Olympic games sold to the countries that host them (to the voters) with the idea that they bring net more for the economy than what they cost ? A rich country should have the shelters and the safe houses and the budgets to deal with human trafficking anyway - but the idea that entertainment like sports events triggered that closing makes it even worse.
