If it would be openly discussed that the education system and the gentrification puts CHILDREN from low income families at a massive disadvantage ...The rich and big biz would be foreced to chip in. The "Personal responsibility" and "Pull yourself up by your boostraps" rhetoric does not work if they want to apply it to children age 5, 10, even teenagers.
Most reasonable persons would concede that - unless they are hellbent on not paying taxes to help change the situation. Or regular persons that are emotionally ! invested into a bias and an ideology. So neoliberal gibberish and the "conservative" agenda have become articles of FAITH for them..
The rich and big biz want to avoid that discussion like the plague. They cannot paint children age 5 or 10 years as "welfare queens" - they lose that argument. The best they can do is go on and on about "parental responsibility".
Well, if the child was not born into the right kind of family (did not win the lottery of birth), what is it supposed to do ?? Is it the fault of the child that the parents are less than ideal (or just do not have enouhg money).
They can wish that some parents would be better all they want, that does not change the fact that the kids do not get a fair shot. Especially if the parents are not good enough, public (government funded programs should try to level the playing field somewhat).
Another point of discussion: Why that seems to be so much easier for middle class people and above to provide good parenting ? It is almost like it is a class / income issue .... but that can of course not be solved on the individual level, it is systemic.
If the rich and their mouthpieces would - correctly - concede that low income children have a massive disadvantage during the formative years, then they admit it is "unfair".
Homo sapiens is a highly social creature. We try to convince each other all the time that things are fair or unfair. If we can convice our discussion partner of that - or enough of our fellows - then we will inevetably demand - and get concessions.
No one openly admits: yes it is unfair, but I am doing good under these conditions, so I have not interest in change. My class / party / company has the power, so we do as we please. Screw you. It would violate the inherent sense of fairness of their voters (unless they are outright psychopaths). For the same reason most selfish people do not even admit it to themselves.
They too need the bullshit bingo talking points. Evolution has honed us to be very social creatures (thus all the debates about what is fair). But of course selfish impulses are strong too. So our better self has to be put to quiet ... some double think, thought stopping clichés, and avoiding to experience the real life outcomes of certain policies (staying in your bubble) helps to reconcile the social nature of homo sapiens with the pursuit of utter selfishness.
