  2. The Dylan Roof thing was actually a smart move, he was stressed out (obviously) and fast food (or sweets) help with that. If that assured his cooperation during interrogation it was a good thing. They could not know whether he had helpers, if he was acting alone, if more was planned etc. He was obviously not stable, and building some rapport can make all the difference in getting information out of him. Even if he only would have said more than he planned to and did not intentionally give them some information. The police also built bridges when they interrogated Chris Watts. pandering to his ego, offering him a "justification" for murdering his wife. They knew that his wife had not just taken the kids and had vanished, that it was highly likely that he had killed them. But he could have had the bodies everywhere. They did not yet have an arrest warrantso he sat voluntarily for hours in those interviews. Another red flag, he wanted to make a good impression, an innocent man would have been cooperative initially, but at some point he would have left. Organizing a search party, yelling at police to find his family, having a nervous breakdown, etc. But he would not have sat there calmly and politely. They told him he could leave, they appreciated his cooperation though. That was another test - an innocent man that was not aware this was voluntary, would have seized the chance to get out and do something - anything - to find the allegedly missing family. So they "planted" the story how he had murdered his wife because he was enraged about ther killing the 2 daughters. They did that during the polygraph, when they posed the questions (did he kill his wife for that reason) it is unusual to pose such a complex question during a polygraph, Watts thought he was really smart - he wasn't. Thinking he was so smart and wanting to appear innocent also meant he did not get a lawyer (which was lucky for police, a lawyer would have told him not to say anything). Then he asked for his father and they let him come in. Then he admitted to murdering his wife (with the pretext he was upset about her allegedly murdering the kids). But he gave them the info where the bodies were. They took it from there.
