3:00 Clinton "won" the '"popular" vote ?? - Not really: In a contest where it was ONLY Hillary Clinton OR Trump she "won". Some (plenty ?) votes she got from voters firmly holding their noses ! And a lot of the margin (3 million votes) came from solidly blue LARGE states like California and New York.
You take CA and NY out of the equation and even the popular vote gives a different picture !
https://www.snopes (dot ) com/fact-check/hillary-clintons-popular-vote-win-came-entirely-from-california/
She got 4,2 million more votes in California than Donald Trump.
Now to be fair the same applies to Trump, we take the many more votes of Texas out of the equation and Clinton would have won the popular vote.
But if the large states have so much influence because the base there would practically vote for anyone ! with a D or R before their name - then the "popular" vote does not signify that much. It certainly does not mean the candidate was generally well liked.
Acutally both - Clinton and Trump - had the highest unfavorable ratings in a presidential race EVER (as long as such things are measured).
HRC turned off a lot of the base (to the point that they could not be bothered NOT EVEN with Trump being her opponent. She depressed the crossover of moderate Republicans - many of them pose as Independents * these days, they do not want to be associated with Trump, and have not "sworn" their allegience to the Republican party.
Sanders does sit well with many blue collar conservative Democrats and even outright Republicans especially those who are "Conservative". They appreciate that he is genuine, that his effort for the economic wellbeing of the many is consistent and believeable.
So he is forgiven his stance on abortion, higher taxes (they realize: not higher for THEM or the regular people), or the desire to somewhat regulate guns. Those potential Democratic voters (many gave a black man with a Muslim sounding name) may be the equivalent to the masses that switiched to the Republican party from time to time (Reagan Democrats, voting for GWB over Al Gore, 2016 Trump voters).
* Independents are likely also no single issue voters - maybe with the exception of lowering taxes - the libertarians tend strongly towards Republican party but feel above declaring their unwavering loyalty to any party.
But Independents do no vote for any other single issue: like guns, or abortion or LGBT rights - these are the favorite "no-costs-attached" issues to rile up the base for BOTH parties. Whatever side the coin is flipped - the issues do not cost the Big Donors profits. The same industries, even individuals fund BOTH parties and they always win, no matter who wins the general election.
