@wilfred-wils Me, ME, Mine. The Delta variante culls some the selfish people who do not mind prolonging the pandemic and indulge their desire of being contrarian (owning the libs beyond everything). They do not mind 600,000 deaths - as long as they think it does not affect them. But Delta upset that calculation, because now it also hits those who felt being selfish would not have bad consequence. For THEM.

@BandlerChing 538 published a polling mid August, so data beginning of August. 10 % hellbent on not getttin the vaccine but 14 % in the Let's-wait-and-see category, many of them people of color. THOSE people are not beyond reach.

@tgs1766 That is not trrue, Trump could not have done it without very willing voters, preachers, radio hosts, and Republican politicians. He might have influenced his base for the better - on the other hand anti vaxxers exist also in other countries. However, their rightwing politicians do not dare to milk the issue as the Republicans did. It would not fly, not even with their base.

@SanMartianRover 10 % oppose it (white, evangelicals, Republican), and 14 % more are hesistant (fivethirtyeight polling - published mid August, so things have changed). The lets-wait-and-see crowd has a disproportionate number of black folks too, but by now they may think better, so those reports over antivaxxers seing the light are not in vain. I guess the black community could be reached via church.

But it needs stupid voters - or the grifters would not jump on the bandwaggon. Politicians in Europe (right wingers) only recently started to be oppositional against mask wearing and what not. They knew it would not fly, not even with their base. I think most of them do not oppose vaccination - they flirt with antivaxxers but that has to be done in an underhanded manner.

They are not UNABLE to think they are UNWILLING.And there are enough grifters that exploit that willful ignorance, R politicians, Trump, preachers, radio hosts, FOX. - Indulging their bias and having knee jerk reactions to what comes from the "wong" side tops everything else. they gleefully turn to every source that will confirm their bias. In the past they trusted doctors and agencies more (it is true they cannot be trusted, but that does not mean ALL they say is untrue). And the crazies and idiots could not encourage each other in the past and even rightwing legacy media felt compelled to have some standards. Now the grifting amateurs can make up shit as they go. and "legacy" rightwing media has to keep up to stay relevant. I guess FOX gets told by advertisers to cut it out, big biz wants to go back to normal. The Russia hysteria on the neoliberal outlets did not help either.

"I thought it was a political game" the Republicans made that into a political football no the Dems, but grifting polticians, preachers and radio hosts only can do that because some people are stubborn, stupid and very, very eager to indulge their bias. Never mind what the American parties did or did not do - What did she think Italy, Germany, Taiwan, ..... Russia were doing ?? The globe is in the grips of a pandemic, the data and easily available information, over 600,000 people dead in the U.S., the pleas to contribute to herd immunity. Nothing of that matters: it is ME, Me, Mine. By being intentionally obtuse to indulge their bias (to own the libs) and their desire to be oppositional (for the wrong causes) - they jeopardize other people and prolong the (economic) crisis. They could not care less - as long as they think THEY will not suffer harm. And of course the thinking does not go far into "indirect" consequences or later consequences. "Conservatives" do not think abstact and beyond their bubble. So indirect consequences is nothing that would make them fall in line, they do not grasp them, or are too intellectually lazy (and gleefully biased) to think around one or two corners. Even IF they stay healthy, that waste of resources and the damage for the economy will manifest and it is likely will impact them negatively, too. Reduced budgets for funding. Harm for the economy overall.
