  1. The most important function of the Dems (for the Big Donors !) is to keep progressives down . - Dems would of course like to win elections, but keeping the money is even more important. The donors want weak Dems (weak regarding the interests of the common people) - or strong Republicans, they win either way. - What do the Democratic sell-outs get ? Campaign donations, they are not in danger of being primaried, and last but not least: cushy jobs for ex politicians (good luck with ending your career in politics in your 40s and looking for a good job in the corporate world when you served the voters more than the Big Donors). They also do not need to be content with the salary of a politician, they can make MORE money later. Some careerists use Congress that way, they spend some years in Congress (with the backing of a Big Donor), establish their rolodex, establish their network and vote in a way that earns them some future favors - and then off to the really lucrative positions and contracts. The Big Donors honor such obligations for past votes in their interest - else the people that are still active in politics would get nervous if THEY are going to get their future rewards. Congress as point on the resume. (The minimum age for Congress is lower, and the hurdle to get elected into Senate is higher, so they typically aim for Congress). As long as they are active in politics they can at least get their books sold (one of the few ways how the Big Donors can bribe them even while in office - the think tanks can buy truckloads of the books - how did Obama get his lucrative contract ? Although he observed the customs to wait until he left office - the 400k speech came pretty quickly). The party establishment is responsible to enforce the interests of Big Donors and selection of candidates within the party accrodingly. They grant and withhold resources accordingly - and the big shots in the party for sure get rewarded. The foot soldiers may not always be rewarded for obedience towards the Big Donors (that gives them an incentive to climb the ladder and earn that status) - but the people running the machine are. And of course the underlings are not only expected to kiss the ass of the donors for their campaigns but to also raise funds for the whole party.

  2. They DO have elections in IRAN - but for the higher offices (not on the city level !!) the mullahs control WHO gets ON the BALLOT. Texas did the same with black people, they could vote - but NOT in the PRIMARIES (so no candidate who would also work for their interests would ever get elected or reelected.)
