China is building 5-6 GW nuclear per year now which may not sound like much, but over decades it adds up. If they triple this and introduce coal liquefaction they could become truly energy independent.

@HR_8035_YEA to go for full energy independence is probably an expense they're not willing to take, but we should consider how vulnerabilities will evolve. Chinese oil production is 4 Mbpd, imports from Russia 3 Mbpd, consumption 14 Mbpd, strategic reserves probably 500 Mb. So 70 days of non-Russian imports in reserve. As transport is electrified and construction normalizes, the vulnerability is set to decline. If a large-scale blockade breaks out, the need for shipping fuel and aviation fuel will be reduced as well. I simply don't think China is in that bad a position.

So in 20-30 years, when construction has subsided and land-based transportation has almost fully electrified along with most heavy machinery, China is vulnerable no more. Also, China is building 5-6 GW of nuclear per year. If they run them for 60 years, that's 300-360 GW asymptotically, which is 30% of current generation. They could easily increase this.
